A rare, 18th-century Japanese woodblock print of ‘Nendaiki Esho.” “Nendaiki Esho” is a historical chronology of Japan from which most of the setsuyoshu were based. It blends legend and history presenting the first emperors and the mythical beginnings of gods and the earth as historical facts. This “Nendaiki Esho” was the primary means by which the commoners learned about the gods of Japan rather than the Nihon Shoki or the Kojiki and was an important part of curriculum in Japanese school until 1945.

This rare 1746 historical narrative contains events such as the separation of the heavens and the earth, the hero Hasubi on his way to Korea, the divine winds that hindered Mongolian fleets from invading Japan, the last Volcanic eruption of Mt. Fuji, and many more tales focusing on bravery and the military skill of warriors. This 1746 edition includes illustrations of temples, castles, samurai, heroes, monks, lords, battles, gods, dragons, demons, fires, animals, and much more!
