Most known for his work ‘Letters Writ by A Turkish Spy’, Giovanni Paolo Marana was a political refugee during the reign of Louis XIV in France. The first volume, however, is the only volume he is known to have written. The subsequent seven volumes are attributed to various authors, even though some experts claim that Marana himself may have written them.

 

‘Letters’ is a collection of hundreds of fictional letters by an Ottoman spy named Mahmut, who also happened to be in the court of Louis XIV. The correspondence in this work covers the mid-17th-century in France are a satirical view of the current state of politics and society in Paris – making slights at figures such as Cardinal Richelieu.
