Unsure? Ask an Expert!

Nicolas Jouin was a French Jansenist known for his satirical poems most of which were written with anti-Jesuit themes. One of his greatest works, perhaps his most noteworthy, was a collection of poetic speeches or ‘harangues’ written in response to the Archbishop of Paris suspending the parish priest of Sarcelles for refusing the Unigenitus Bull in 1729. These 8 harangues were written with the sole purpose of attacking the Jesuits and decrying the Unigentius Bull (which condemned Jansenism); however, they have since become the origin for a new literary genre, the Sarcellades – a political or religious satire written in a low-class vernacular or ‘patois’.
