John Dart was an early 18th-century English historian who is primarily remembered for his historical perspectives of Westminster Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral. While the historical contents of this enormous folio first edition of Dart’s “Canterbury” are important, the subscriber pages are perhaps the most interesting aspect of this work. Unlike most works from this era, this book features engraved views of each subscriber’s arms – hundreds of illustrated figures of coats-of-arms! Other full-page engravings appear throughout this book – views of tombs, portraits, and places of rest of English saints and nobles.
