Originally published in 1674, Louis Moreri’s “Grand Dictionaire Historique” was an encyclopedia focused on historical and biographical articles. The original French and this English edition were critical in giving rise to more important dictionaries, such as Pierre Bayle’s “Critical Dictionary.”

While this work was highly influential during its time, it was eventually replaced as the preeminent reference work when Diderot’s ‘Encyclopedia’ was printed, but not before going through nearly 20 editions. This 1698 French edition is one of the earliest of this landmark encyclopedia and is notable for being an enormous, four-volume set! Absolutely huge!
