René Le Bossu was a prestigious 17th-century French literary critic best-known for his commentary on epic poetry. In his book “Treatise on Epic Poetry”, Bossu focused on what makes successful epic poetry, identifying that subject matter took precedence over characters and character development. Much of the commentary comes from Bossu’s study of Homer, Aesop, and Virgil and Dryden’s famous interpretations.
This 1695 first English edition of Bossu was published with an essay on satire by Dacier as well as Fontenelle’s treatise on pastoral literature.
