Roger Boyle, was a 17^th-century Irish politician, known for becoming the first Earl of Orrery. His political importance came through his correspondence with both Charles II and Oliver Cromwell, the latter of whom offered Boyle a role in the English conquest of Ireland.

 

While his political career was more prominent, he also wrote historical novels and plays-in-verse. Two of his plays, ‘Henry V’ and ‘Mustafa’, proved to be highly popular both during and after Boyle’s life. These two plays were published by Herringman in 1690 – a fine collection of 17^th-century Irish literature!
