1685 Illustrated Art of WAR Military Fortification Engineering Travaux de Mars
Alain Manesson Mallet was an important 17th-century French cartographer and engineer who published a number of works on architecture and warfare. His most famous work ‘Les Travaux des Mars’ was an interesting treatise in which Mallet appears to have written two distinct works and published them under one title. Published in three volumes, the first two (which are entirely independent of the third) are concerned with an analysis of the architecture and engineering of many European cities, focusing special attention to fortifications and geometrical elements of city walls, which is depicted by over 350 fascinating full-page engravings. Cities include Douay, Arras, Lisbon, Brest, Barcelona, La Rochelle, Landrecy, and Geneva. Each tome is illustrated with depictions of the fortifications.
