Daniel Whitby was a 17^th-century theologian known for his Protestant Bible commentaries. It was, however, with his book ‘The Protestant Reconciler’ that Whitby’s popularity began to wane. Shortly after its release in 1682, this work, which was published anonymously, was Whitby’s attempt to concede to the English nonconformists – a stance which quickly caused the public to turn on him. In fact, the University of Oxford called for all copies of his book to be burned!

This 1683 printing was published the same year as the Oxford burnings – a very rare nonconformist treatise.
