James Dalrymple, the first Viscount of Stair, was a 17^th-century Scottish lawyer known for his involvement in the Scottish Enlightenment. He published numerous works on Scottish law and has a lasting legacy of influence on Scottish history. Numerous scholars recognize Dalrymple’s book “The Institutions of the Law of Scotland” as not only being his best book, but one of the best works of its kind. First published in 1681, this book describes the law practices used in Scotland into the 18^th-century. According to Broadie,

“This book set the practice of law in Scotland on a sound philosophical basis, almost certainly helped to ensure that Scots law would remain in force as a distinct entity after the union of 1707”
