      • The coat of arms and motto for Edward Gordon Douglas-Pennant, 1st Baron Penrhyn (1800–1886), a Scottish landowner in Wales and Jamaica, and a Conservative Party politician. He played a major part in the development of the Welsh slate industry. He inherited the estate of Penrhyn Castle through marriage to the daughter of George Hay Dawkins-Pennant (1764–1840). The Pennant estate had acquired wealth through the exploitation of Jamaican plantations and slaves, with both George Hay Dawkins-Pennant and his cousin Richard Pennant, first Baron of Penrhyn (1737-1808) being staunchly opposed to abolition.
