Unsure? Ask an Expert!

John Dryden was a 17th-century English poet who was known as England’s very first Poet Laureate and would lead England into a literary period that would become known as the Age of Dryden. He also established standard forms of English poetry though his satires, fables, epigrams, poems, and plays.

‘Essay of Dramatick Poesie’ was Dryden’s attempt to compare English Drama with traditional Spanish and French poetry. The work was written in a curious form – a dialogue between four friends called Eugenius, Crites, Lisideius, and Neander who discuss three central themes:

  • Classical vs. modern drama
  • French drama vs. English plays
  • The use of rhyme scheme in drama

Dryden uses these personas to define English drama and the role that playwrights play in the development and evolution of dramas. It is worth noting that William Shakespeare is discussed numerous times throughout this work.
