John Denham was a 17^th-century Irish poet. His two most famous poems were ‘The Sophy’ and ‘Cooper’s Hill’, both of which are included in this 1668 first edition of his poems. ‘Cooper’s Hill’ was the first English poem to be written specifically to provide a description of local scenery, in this case, the famed Thames Valley in Surrey. And while the work was written through the lens of the English countryside, it offers his perspective on the English Civil War and its cultural impact.
