Aphthonius of Antioch was a classical Greek rhetorician who is primarily remembered today for his sophist literary movement of ‘Atticism’. Aphthonius wrote a book called ‘Progymnasmata’ which described and defended Atticism, or the ancient Greek literary style, as opposed to the more ‘modern’ approaches to Greek of Plutarch and Josephus.
