      • Victor de Laprade (1812–1883) was a 19th-century French poet and literary critic. He served as a professor of French literature at Lyon until he was fired for publishing a satirical poem that was highly critical of Napoleon III and the Second Empire. Laprade’s prose criticisms consist of classical and metaphysical studies, as well as wide-ranging commentary on European literature. He disliked irony and skepticism, which probably lead him to underrate 18th-century literature. He was also elected to the National Assembly as a conservative in 1871.
