James Howell was a 17^th-century Welsh historian who is primarily remembered for his letters. This group of letters, better-known as ‘Epistolae Ho-Elianae’, is a collection of travel memoirs describing many of the locations he visited prior to his imprisonment in Fleet Prison. While the letters are addressed to specific individuals, the contents highlight the recipients’ locations more than the people themselves – locations such as Oxford, Antwerp, Paris, Barcelona, Venice, and still others. Another aspect reinforcing this work as a travelogue is that Howell created fictional characters to write these letters to.
