Born Benedetto Cajetani, Pope Bonifacio VIII was a late 13th-century Catholic ruler who played an important role in the development of papal power in Europe. In the mid-17th-century, a work by Gio Battista Rubeus was written that covered all of the major aspects of the Pope’s life including his influence on the Scottish War for Independence, interactions with Wenceslaus II of Bohemia, and of course his feuds with Philip IV of France, who ultimately was responsible for the Pope’s death.

This 1651 first edition account of the life of Pope Bonifacio VIII is quite rare and features a charming folding engraving of enshrined popes.
