‘De Situ Orbis’ by Pomponius Mela was the only authority on ancient geography for more than 1000 years. Written in the middle of the 1^st-century, this work describes all of the known world (as it was in the first-century AD) noting the locations of the British Islands, a survey of the Roman Empire, and even some of the earliest accounts of ancient Roman topography.

This 1646 Vogel edition was published in Leiden, published as an extension of the famed Elzevier publishing house. This edition notably contains the works of other popular ancient geographers including Solinus and Pliny, as well as “Aethici Cosmographia”, an 8^th-century account of the imaginary travels of Aethicus.
