Helkiah Crooke was an early 17^th-century English physician who is primarily remembered for his anatomy masterpiece “Mikrokosmographia”. In this book, also known as “Description of the Body of Man”, Crooke was heavily critical of Galen and many of widely accepted and common practice methods from antiquity.

Nevertheless, the book was tremendously successful throughout England much in part to the countless in-text illustrations depicting bizarre, grotesque, and often gruesome views of anatomy and injury. The illustration of the “man wounded with all kinds of Weapons in every part of the body” is a rather curious image.
