Claudius Aelianus was a 2nd-century Roman orator known for his lessons in Greek and works that describe Greco-Roman lifestyle and world-views. Only two of his works have survived, one being ‘Varia Historia’ – a collection of anecdotes, maxims, biographical sketches, and reports of natural wonders. Aelianus describes mythological heroes, living rulers and Caesars, Olympic athletes, religious beliefs, funeral customs, Greek art, fishing techniques, serpent and animal worship, styles of dress and costumes, and the lives of Greek and Roman playwrights.

‘Varia Historia’ is generally considered to be a 3rd-century work, even though the first edition was not printed until 1545. This 1610 edition was published in Latin / Greek parallel; and while the title page states it was published in Lyon (Lugduni), it was actually published in Geneva by Jean de Tournes. (per USTC and GLN)
