Following the 1288 Battle of Worringen the Brabant defeat of the Archbishop of Cologne, Cologne became a free city – a city whose free state would be challenged for centuries.

The diplomacy, politics, and city statutes are all thoroughly described by Conrad Betzdorp in his 1582 book “Folgen die Statuta…der Statt Colln” – one of the best sources of medieval Cologne, its laws and legal statutes, and the archbishopsy of Cologne.
