Arnaldus de Villa Nova was a 13^th-century Catalan physician whose primary focus of medicine was prevention through healthy living. He was well read in the works of Galen and Hippocrates and even translated them into Latin. His writings, many on alchemical practices, caused him to be condemned by the church. Nevertheless, his book “De conservanda bona valetudine, opusculum” proved to be one of the most reliable sources of healthy living for centuries. This book offered practical advice for living a long and healthy life such as ‘avoid large meals before bed’, ‘eat healthy food such as nuts’. This work was Arnaldus’s commentary on the medical advices given from the Schola Medica Salernitana, or School of Salerno.
