1562 Saint Augustine City of God + Spanish Luis Vives Commentary Philosophy
Augustine of Hippo was a 5th-century early Christian church philosopher and theologian. He is most known for his work ‘City of God’. ‘City of God’ was a response to the assertions that the rise of Christianity was the cause of the decline of Rome. In this work, Augustine discusses the existence of God and evil, an all-knowing God, original sin, and Christian doctrines. Augustine sought to denounce much of the magic and pagan worship that was rampant throughout the known world.
Numerous commentaries were published on Augustine’s ‘City of God’, including that of Juan Luis Vives. This commentary, which was first published in 1522, proved to be Vives’ ticket to become the personal tutor to Princess Mary I of England.
This 1562 edition was published in Lyon by Junta.
