Johannes Cochlaeus was a 16^th-century Catholic humanist who, curiously, found ways to frustrate both the Catholic Church and Protestant reformers with his writings. In addition to writing against Luther’s doctrines of predestination and the Bible’s authority on the sacraments, he wrote an interesting treatise describing Purgatory. In this work ‘De Animarum Purgatorio’, Cochlaeus refutes the theological views that Purgatory does not exist.
