1531 1st ed Petrus Crescentiis Agriculture HERBAL Illustrated Woodcuts Botany
An exceedingly rare first edition of Petrus Crescentiis’s history of agriculture. Crescentiis (or Crescenzi) was a 13th-century horticulturist known for his famous writings on agriculture. ‘Ruralia Commoda’ was written between 1304-09 and would become the first printed text on agriculture in 1471. It would see nearly 60 editions throughout the next century. (Anderson)
Henry Probasco’s “Catalogue” states that,
“This volume also contains the following: Die acht Bucher des hochberumpten Aurelii Cornelii Celsi vo beyderley Medicine, Newlich jetzo verdeutscht durch Rhussner. Meyntz, Schoffer, 1531.”
Printed in folio, this incredible work is filled with woodcuts depicting gardeners planting vegetables and other plants, astronomers researching the skies, various plants, seeds, berries, and flowers, proper care and watering techniques, and a few bizarre illustrations of ‘man-plants’.
According to the British Museum Catalogue, this work was edited and translated in 1511 but did not see print until this first edition in 1531. This edition was printed in Strasbourg by Johannes Knoblouch, a German printer known for printing sermons, theological works, and important writings of Erasmus and Luther in the first half of the 16th-century.
