De Bello Civili – Lucan – 1658 | Pharsalia with Folding Map & Grotius Commentary
1658 Leiden edition of Lucan’s Pharsalia with commentary by Grotius and Farnaby, edited by Schrevel, featuring a folding map and engraved title page in original leather.
Lucan’s De Bello Civili, also known as Pharsalia, is an ancient Roman poem describing the conflicts between Julius Caesar and Pompey-led Senate during the Roman Civil War. Lucan discusses the cultural despair experienced in Rome and also exposes many of the flaws that Julius Caesar possessed in his political and military leadership. In addition to historical importance, Pharsalia includes elements of the supernatural, dream interpretation, ghosts, and prophetic visions.
This 1658 edition was in Leiden by Hackius and includes commentary by Hugo Grotius and Thomas Farnaby, edited by Cornelius Schrevel. The oft-lacking folding map is included and adds and significant level of desirability to this work.
