Image Gallery Description & Details

The first edition, first printing of Mark Twain’s Autobiography. In Two Volumes, published in 1924 by Harper and Brothers, compiles the renowned author’s recollections and personal commentary rather than presenting a traditional chronological biography. Twain dictated much of the content late in life, resulting in an informal, conversational style. Albert Bigelow Paine, Twain’s friend and literary executor, provided the introduction, noting Twain’s decision to dictate candidly under the assurance of posthumous publication. These two volumes include approximately two-fifths of Twain’s previously unpublished autobiographical fragments, drawn from various unfinished attempts, portraying his experiences and perceptions directly in his own words.
