Image Gallery Description & Details

William Francis Patrick Napier’s History of the War in the Peninsula and in the South of France is a survey of the wars fought in Spain and southern France during the Napoleonic campaigns. First published in 1828 by a British army veteran, this book would see six volumes published through 1840.

In 1807, Napoleon invaded Portugal with Spain; however, a year later, France turned on Spain and a large guerrilla warfare emerged. Now known as ‘The Peninsular War’, this conflict was profusely written about over the next century; however, the Napier account is one of the earliest!

It is the maps, however, that make this first edition truly remarkable. Maps include views of Battle of Valencia, Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo, and Siege of Taragona and many others.
