Image Gallery Description & Details

This 1514 printing of Galeni Opera is a post-incunable medical text published in Paris by Henri Estienne, one of the most influential scholar-printers of the French Renaissance. This work contains several of Galen’s primary treatises: De differentiis morborum, De inaequali intemperatura, De arte curativa ad Glauconem, and De crisibus. Niccolò Leoniceno’s commentary emerges from Renaissance scholarly medical traditions, indicating notable developments (and the lack thereof) in medicine from Greek antiquity to the sixteenth century, nearly 1300 years apart! This volume is one of the earlier publications from Estienne’s press and exemplifies the period’s scholarly revival of classical medical authors.
