Image Gallery Description & Details

Emancipation in the West Indies: A Six Months’ Tour in Antigua, Barbadoes, and Jamaica, in the Year 1837 by James A. Thome and J. Horace Kimball was released by the American Anti-Slavery Society in 1839. This second edition chronicles a fact-finding journey through three Caribbean colonies where slavery had ended. The authors, selected by the Society, recorded what they saw and heard from residents, laborers, officials, and planters. Their route took them through towns and plantations, schools and churches. While they found discontent among former slaveholders, their observations recorded shifts in social life, increased religious gatherings, and emerging educational activity among formerly enslaved communities. A folding map is included.
