Dante’s Inferno – Dante Alighieri – ca. 1890 | Gustave Doré Edition
Large 1890s Chicago edition of Dante’s Inferno, illustrated with 70 full-page Doré engravings, bound in red cloth and printed in quarto format.
Dante’s Inferno, from the Divine Comedy, is one of the most famous works of allegorical literature; a work that has referenced and reworked for centuries. Henry Cary’s English translation is considered one of the most popular translations of the work, though that may be attributed to the artwork of Gustave Dore that is regularly found with Cary’s English. Dore’s artwork is striking, and it appears in 70 plates throughout this large 19th-century tome.
