Les Commentaires de César – Julius Caesar – 1763 | Maps & Plates
French 1763 edition of Caesar’s Commentaries translated by d’Ablancourt and Mascrier, complete in two volumes with 13 plates and two folding maps by d’Anville.
Julius Caesar’s Les commentaires are some of the most prolific military writings. They focus on first-hand accounts of Julius Caesar in the Callic wars but were written as though from a third-person view. This 1763 French edition was edited and translated by Perrot d’Ablancourt and Mascrier and includes Aulus Hirtius’ Bellum Alexandrinum and his continuation of Caesar’s De Bello Gallico. The draw of this two-volume edition, however, is the impressive, folding maps by Bourguignon d’Anville and 13 full-page and folding engravings.
