Alaska and the Klondike Gold Fields by A.C. Harris, published in 1897, captures the chaos and promise of the Yukon gold rush through firsthand reporting and hearsay of the period. Printed during the height of Klondike fever, this book was designed to appeal to those considering a journey north. It includes descriptions of the best ways to mine in the harsh climate and terrain, citing the success of adventurers who “struck it rich.”

The text and accompanying illustrations detail daily life in the gold fields, describing camp conditions and moral codes. Harris also dedicates space for the testimonies of women in the camps, discusses fraudulent clairvoyants, and examines the customs and beliefs of the native tribes such as the Aleut and Innuit.
