Exploration of the Great Salt Lake – Howard Stansbury – 1852 | First Edition, 58 Plates
This first Senate edition of Stansbury’s 1852 U.S. Army Corps report on his expeditionary survey of the Great Salt Lake region details the geography and mineral potential of the region, as well as describing Mormon life and emigration routes.
Exploration and Survey of the Valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah by Howard Stansbury is a culminating report of his expedition to map and scientifically assess the American West. Commissioned by the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, Stansbury’s survey began in 1849 under orders from Fort Leavenworth, aiming to assess emigration routes, locate viable paths for a transcontinental railroad, and document the natural and mineral landscape of the Salt Lake Valley. This first edition, published in Philadelphia by Lippincott, Grambo and Co. in 1852, is a milestone in early American cartography and overland exploration. The volume includes dozens of lithographic plates documenting geological observations, plants and animal life, and even panoramic landscapes during the two-year journey. The report exemplifies the ideals of westward expansion, describing new pathways through the Rocky Mountains and addressing the domestic structure of the Mormon community. It also presents one of the earliest scientific records assessing the region’s agricultural and mineral potential.
