Consolation of Philosophy – Boethius – 1656 | Renatus Vallinus | Rare Paris Variant
1656 Latin edition of Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy with Opuscula sacra, edited by Vallinus, printed in Paris by Thomam Jolly with engraved title page in gilt spine leather binding.
Consolationis philosophiae libri V, or The Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius is a work that has been described as “the single most important and influential work on Medieval and early Renaissance Christianity and is the last great Western work of the Classical Period.” (‘Consolation of Philosophy’, Oxford 2000, introduction). This work is an imaginary dialogue between Boethius and the personification of philosophy, arguing that there is a higher power. Boethius engages questions such as the nature of predestination and free will, why evil men often prosper, and good men fall into ruin, human nature, virtue, and justice.
This 1656 edition was edited by Vallinus and published in Paris, a curiously unrecorded variant of the Lugduni Batavorum, Hackium printing.
