Robert Carswell was a 19^th-century Scottish pathologist who is primarily remembered for his contributions to the study of multiple sclerosis. Today, however, his fame rests on the impressive, color illustrations of diseased human anatomy. In his book “Illustrations of the Elementary Forms of Disease”, Carswell describes the changes in diseased tissues, skin diseases, localized diseases in organs, and full-system pathology.

This collection of 28 plates from Carswell’s “Illustrations” are some of the most desirable medical plates from the 19^th-century. In fact, it is rare to find so many of these plates together as they are often extracted and displayed as individual pieces.
