Legatio pro Christianis – Athenagoras – 1706 | Greek Apologetics, Oxford
Oxford-printed Latin edition of Athenagoras’ Legatio and Resurrection treatise, edited by Edward Dechair in 1706, presenting early apologetic texts directed at Roman imperial authorities.
Sancti Athenagoræ Atheniensis philosophi is a rare Oxford-printed edition of the two surviving works of the 2nd-century Christian writer Athenagoras of Athens. This Greek and Latin volume includes his “Legatio pro Christianis” which was a plea to Marcus Arelius and Commodus to show mercy to Christians and stop their unjust discrimination. Alongside it appears De Resurrectione Mortuorum, in which Athenagoras articulates his reasoning on the doctrine of bodily resurrection. The text was edited with commentary by Edward Dechair as well as annotations from Peter Suffridus, Langi, and others.
