Image Gallery Description & Details

The Adventures of Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes appears here in Charles Jarvis’s English version, printed by Ward, Lock & Co. around 1870. The book features sixteen full-page plates and approximately 700 in-text engravings by Tony Johannot. Jarvis’s translation, first published in the 18th century, remained widely printed through the following century. The terra cotta cloth boards carry decorative stamping and gilt accents on the spine and front. The title page is undated, though format, typography, and publisher records suggest an issue date in the early 1870s. Hundreds of illustrations appear throughout the text in both full-page and in-text.
