1611 King James Bible | 1st ed John SPEED New Testament Genealogy + MAP
In the 16th– and 17th-centuries, English Bibles printed by Barker were extremely popular and have maintained their value and desirability into the 21st-century. However, none are as valuable as the famous 1611 King James Bible.
This extremely rare and valuable printing of the King James Bible should be considered one of the rarest Bibles available. While the general title page is lacking, the original New Testament title page is included and dated 1611. According to D&M, New Testament title pages were only dated “1611” in 1611 and 1612 printings, but also that even in 1613 editions “probably the greater part of the book was printed in 1611” . It was also common for Bibles from this era to be ‘pieced together’ – as is the case with this example.
John Speed’s genealogies of the families in the Bible proved to be the most popular of all biblical genealogies, so much so that they were printed in the earliest edition of the King James Bible and featured the famous engraving of Adam and Eve eating from the forbidden tree.
Nonetheless, this example contains portions that were published in 1611 – the year of the true first King James Bible! Darlow & Moule suggests that Bibles with the 1611 NT title page were likely not printed after 1612, making this one of the earliest KJV Bibles ever printed!
