Beginning in 1899, the British Empire engaged in war with the South African Republic. This war, known as the Second Boer War, was a lingering battle with guerrilla warfare. Accounts and illustrations from the war were collected and reported in Herbert W Wilson’s ‘With the Flag to Pretoria’, a work describing the British troop movements, battle tactics, lists of important figures and volunteers, and descriptions of landscapes of Johannesburg and Pretoria.

 

The first two volumes of this work were published in 1900 and feature impressive illustrations including photographs, drawings, and small maps. Following the success of the first two volumes, a second set was published in 1902 entitled “After Pretoria”, published as a supplement and continuation of “With the Flag”.
