William Prynne, a 17^th-century Puritan lawyer, was known for his political pamphlets, meditations, and support of the Restoration. In his book “The Unbishoping of Timothy and Titus, and of the Angel of the Church of Ephesus”, Prynne refutes the idea that New Testament figures Titus and Timothy were the first diocesan bishops of Crete and Ephesus.

Prynne uses biblical passages to support his notion that there is no hierarchical episcopy within the church, all in the attempt to undermine the legitimacy of Catholic bishops in 18^th-century England and Europe.
