1721 Thomas Gage Voyages in MEXICO & Nicaragua | Aztec Ruins & New World MAPS
Thomas Gage was a 17th-century English Dominican preacher who is primarily remembered for his voyages to the New World. In 1625, he set sail (as a stowaway in a barrel!) on a voyage for the Philippines; however, when he arrived in Mexico City, he abandoned the crew and escaped toward Guatemala. He joined the Dominicans in Central America and began serving as a missionary in Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica before returning to Europe in 1638.
He published an account of his voyage which described the state of Jesuit missions in the New World, Dutch pirates in the Caribbean, and descriptions of local tribes and peoples in Central America.
This remarkable 1721 edition of Gage’s account of his voyages is notable for including folding maps and illustrations including:
- Maps –
- Map of North America
- Showing California as an island
- map of Central America / Mexico
- Map of North America
- City view of Mexico City
- Aztec ruins
- Mexican royal processions
Important note: The binding of this example states “Vol I”; however, the book includes both volumes – not just the first volume.
Item number: #28522
Price: $950
