Saint Dorotheus of Gaza was a 6^th-century monk from Syria/Palestine who wrote several instructional treatises for the other members of his monastery. These works were written as directions on spiritual living – stressing the importance of obedience, silence, reading the scriptures, character of God, and overcoming temptation and human vices.

This 17^th-century French version of writings of Dorotheus includes many of the spiritual doctrines written by Giles of Assisi, 13^th-century saint. This edition is believed to be translated into French by Francois Bouton.
