The monumental work by Comte de Buffon, “Histoire Naturelle,” was fascinating 18th-century collection of articles and encyclopedia entries on material sciences, physics, chemistry, technology, as well as the history of animals. Buffon wrote the volumes with the intent of addressing all-natural history, but after realizing the grandeur of the work, he focused on the individual orders of living things. The volumes of birds are easily some of the most popular and famous tomes from the work. These four volumes contain dozens of full-page engravings depicting various types of birds including horn-bills and toucans, parrots and parakeets, cuckoos, wrens, and jaconas.

This set of four volumes is the first English edition of Buffon’s Birds.
