1650 – Works of Hesiod | Theogony, Works and Days, Shield of Heracles | Latin & Greek
Hesiodi Ascraei Quae Extant, 1650 Leiden edition, presents Hesiod’s works in Greek and Latin, including Theogony, Works and Days, and the Shield of Heracles.
A rare, early 17th-century printing of the works of Hesiod, a Greek poet who is thought to have been a peer of Homer. Only three surviving works have been attributed to Hesiod, of which, Theogony is the most famous. Theogony describes the origins and genealogies of the Greek gods, beginning with the first gods through the children of Zeus and the life of Prometheus. Hesiod had a profound effect on early Greek philosophy, early rhetoric, and the development out of archaic religious beliefs.
This 1650 Greek and Latin edition contains each of the three known works of Hesiod – Works and Days, Shield of Heracles, and Theogony – as well as a life of Hesiod.
