1783 – Primitive Christianity Revived – William Penn | Quaker Doctrine & Penington Essays
Philadelphia printing of William Penn’s Primitive Christianity Revived, issued in 1783 with essays by Isaac Penington, presenting early Quaker religious writings in a single American volume.
William Penn was one of the most important figures in the establishment and rise of religious freedom in the United States. After coming to Pennsylvania to advocate for freedoms, Penn’s work led to the growth of Quakerism in America. Because of his religious beliefs, Penn endured numerous bouts of persecution which inspired him to write works such as Primitive Christianity Revived – one of the clearest statements of early Quaker theology and practice.
In addition to Penn, this 1783 Philadelphia tome includes the Quaker writings of Isaac Penington, including his “Directions to the Panting Soul”.
