1920 – Economic Consequences of Peace – Keynes | First American Edition
First American edition of The Economic Consequences of the Peace by John Maynard Keynes, 1920, a major critique of the Treaty of Versailles and its reparations settlement.
John Maynard Keynes was a 20th-century British economist most known for his book The Economic Consequences of the Peace.
“This work was widely acclaimed by the public because it disclosed, to a far greater extent than anything up to that time, the proceedings at the Versailles Conference, where the treaty with Germany was being drafted. Keynes, who attended these meetings as a member of the British Treasure delegation, showed himself to be no meek author, but a brilliant writer who was determined to deliver his message to the world and be heard. The gospel he sought to preach was that the treat was ‘an act of wickedness and folly”. (Cammarosano, 70)
Keynes strongly protested the imposition of large reparations on Germany and insisted the terms of the treaty never be enforced. This book made Keynes extremely popular with the public, but extremely unpopular with the government. (Breit, 67)
