The National Burns – Rev. George Gilfillan – c.1880 | Scottish Poetry, Illustrated
This illustrated edition of The National Burns, a celebration of Scotland’s national poet, includes a biography by Rev. George Gilfillan and features musical notation, engraved plates, and a color map, published in four decorative divisions by William Mackenzie.
The National Burns, edited by Rev. George Gilfillan, is an homage to Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns. Issued by William Mackenzie around 1880, this richly illustrated work is divided into four separately bound divisions, each bound in decorative green cloth. Gilfillan, a respected Scottish minister and literary critic, contributed an original biography of Burns, which set the National Burns apart from other collections of Burns’ works. This set also integrates both musical staff and sol-fa notations alongside 32 engraved portraits and plates, decorating Burns’s songs and poems with depictions of the Scottish landscapes, folktales, and people that were so frequently the subjects of his work.
