1856 – Minnesota History | Indian Tribes, Sioux, Chippewa | Huge Folding Map
First edition of Bond’s 1856 account of Minnesota’s territorial development, with folding map and content on Native tribes, steamboat trade, and Prince Rupert’s Land.
Minnesota and Its Resources by J. Wesley Bond (First edition, 1856) is a pre-Civil War history of the state of Minnesota. Notably, this book contains descriptions of political structures and natural resources, but it is the documentation of Native American Indian tribes that make it so desirable. This work describes the lives and customs of Sioux, Chippewas, Winnebagoes, Assiniboins, Crees, Montagnes, and Esquimaux peoples. full section at the end presents “Campfire Sketches,” short episodic narratives from the frontier. It also contains a commentary on the 1851 Sioux Treaty and Prince Rupert’s Land. This first edition retains the huge folding map which is often lacking.
