John Erichsen was a 19^th-century British surgeon best known for his book ‘The Science and Art of Surgery’. In this book, Erichsen describes numerous antiseptic procedures as well as descriptions of spinal and brain stem operations, of which he was considered an authoritative scholar.

This impressive 1860 printing of Erichsen’s ‘Art of Surgery’ contains hundreds of in-text illustrated figures throughout – views of surgical operations, human anatomy, and diseases and injuries.

However, that alone is not the draw of this example. This particular example was issued by the United States Hospital Department. On the spine, a faint but legible stamp still exists – “USA Hosp. Dept”. Medical books with these sort of stamps are notoriously valuable and highly coveted by physicians and Civil War experts alike!
